Remember, these suggestions are guides only, so be careful not to take them as a given. All support offered by VET providers and Universities must be negotiated and approved by the institution.

How to get the support you need at.....

Central Queensland University

During enrolment (which at CQU is done electronically over the Web—'E-rolment') you will be asked to disclose whether you have a disability or chronic medical condition that may effect your studies. It is important that you tick this box.

NB Disclosure of your disability will not in any way effect your acceptance into your program.

Once you have done this the Equity and Diversity Office (EDO) will send you a registration form. Fill this form out and return it to the EDO along with copies of any relevant medical documentation or assessments. You will be contacted, by the EDO, prior to the commencement of term for an interview.

Before the interview, prepare yourself so that you can explain clearly the nature of your condition and the supports and adjustments that will best enable you to access the materials and demonstrate your skills and knowledge. Obtain copies of any assessments, reports or letters from professionals, medical or otherwise that can support your explanation. The EDO may organise for you to meet with other staff in the University such as teaching staff, Student Services staff or the Participation Assistants (readers, scribes, interpreters, etc) who may provide your support.

You will be informed by the EDO of the supports they are able to provide for you during the term. If you are not satisfied with the decision you are welcome to contact the EDO for a review.

Inform the EDO immediately if your circumstances change.

Central Queensland TAFE

When you enrol at CQ TAFE, you will complete a 'New Student—Personal Details' form. Question 5 on this form relates to disability and requests that you tick a box asking whether you have a disability, what type of disability you have, and whether you would like to receive advice on support services.

If you do request further advice, your name will be referred to the Disability Services Officer who will contact you by telephone or post out information regarding the disability support service. If you then require specialist support, you will be asked to either meet with or contact the Disability Services Officer who will ask you to complete a Disability Registration form.

The Disability Services Officer will then co-ordinate your specialist support needs. If you complete an application form prior to enrolment, it is also important that you complete the disability section on this form. This assists in ensuring that any requirements you have will be organised prior to enrolment and course commencement. The Disability Services Officer is able to provide support in a wide variety of areas including specialist tutoring, sign language interpreting, note taking/scribe, reading support, or adaptive equipment/software. For further information on this service, contact: 49202493.

Wide Bay TAFE

Students with a disability who are considering enrolling at Wide Bay TAFE are encouraged to disclose any information about their disability which will be relevant to the support they may require in their studies. The term 'disability' refers to any illness, impairment or condition which may impact on a student's ability to successfully complete training. Learning disabilities should also be identified.

Prior to enrolment you may need to complete an application form for admission to a TAFE program. This form provides you with the opportunity to disclose that you have a disability. Early disclosure offers the best chance of having support in place when your program commences.

During enrolment you will also have the opportunity to identify that you have a disability and to complete a Student Services Referral Form requesting that the disability officer contacts you. This information is treated confidentially, and will not be disclosed to others without your permission. The disability officer will work closely with you so that your support needs are met as effectively as possible. You are encouraged to contact the disability officer to discuss concerns at any time.
